On the River: An Engagement Story

Couple walking on a rock during engagement shoot

Liz + Sam + Eight Muddy Paws

Some days stick to your ribs, filling your heart to the brim (and then some). I will cherish this day forever. I hope these moments put you right on a muddy desert river, cottonwoods starting to turn with the brilliance of autumn, and remind you that big, earth-moving love is real.

Some places feel like home. To celebrate Liz & Sam’s engagement, it made sense to pack up their boat, the pups, and head out to one of their favorite stretches of river. They chose a spot that they’ve spent many nights sleeping under the desert stars for us to spend the day. Liz, a geologist, graciously answered all of my questions about this place I’ve long wondered about, and shared garden fresh treats, with some things for me to take home tucked into bags. I can see why Sam fell in love with her, and her heart full of wonder and tenderness towards this world. This job is interesting, I am put in the way of the most beautiful days and people, but a day like this let’s me get a glimpse into the everyday dynamic that builds a bond. Watching the way Liz and Sam worked seamlessly together to tie up their boat, get setup, and then effortlessly fall into each other on a cottonwood log showed me a little peek into what life must feel like for them together. I wanted these photos to show their love of this landscape, this river, and the gentle ease of their time together. I can’t wait to be back out in the desert, on a different river celebrating them getting married. For now- scroll for a little story of two people’s love for each other, their dogs and a place that has a way of knowing just how to hold you.
